Kajszczak A., Cymerys J., Winnicka A., Niemiałtowski M., Kinetics of bacterial growth and neutrophil oxidative burst activity of bovine milk, Medycyna Weterynaryjna, Publication of the Polish Society of Veterinary Sciences (PSVS), vol. 58 (10), 739-824, 2002 pages 780-783 ABSTRACT The aim of our study was to define the growth kinetics of bacteria isolated from Mastitic cows and quantify the oxidative burst of neutrophils isolated from normal and Mastitic milk. Additionally, susceptibility of bacteria to Penicillin, Amoxicillin and Erythromycin at various concentrations was determined. Data on bacterial growth kinetics were acquired in Bioscreen. Results indicate that Amoxicillin was not effective at limiting bacterial growth, while Penicillin and Erythromycin showed enhanced growth inhibition to S. aureus and S. uberis, respectively. Flow Cytometry analysis revealed a high oxidative burst of activity in a number of the investigated neutrophiles, especially in mastitic milk samples where opsonized E. coli acted as a chemotactic factor.
